During the UN Sustainable Development Summit from 25-27 September 2015 in New York, the final document titled "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" was adopted including 17 Sustainable Development Goals, also known as Global Goals and Agenda 2030.
According to the UN Sustainable Development Knowledge Plattform, "The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets which we are announcing today demonstrate the scale and ambition of this new universal Agenda. They seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what these did not achieve."
193 world leaders committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, identifying them as set of ambitious targets to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, address climate change but also to include the private sector stakeholders to contribute their share to a sustainable development and subsequent future.
The inclusion of the businesses into the Global Goals, can be seen as strong signal by the UN of an intensified private sector involvement during the coming years, to jointly meet the set goals by 2030.
The highlighted goals include:
Goal 7 - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
Goal 8 - Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
Goal 9 - Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
Goal 11 - Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
OiER is looking forward to joining forces with the private sector stakeholders, including national and international businesses, to work towards a more sustainable future and to reach the set goals by 2030.
